This volcanic archipelago, consisting of 110 islands, stretches in an arc from the Alaska Peninsula to the base of Kamchatka, defining the people's deep, age-old connection to the sea. The environmental conditions shaped the Aleuts into first-class seafarers, professional fishermen, and expert hunters. Their way of life required not only courage but also high technology for their time. Their key invention was the lightweight and maneuverable baidarka (kayak). Its design allowed them to navigate stormy seas successfully and hunt marine animals—a pursuit that required coordinated teamwork and a profound knowledge of maritime rules. Fishing also played a vital role; Aleuts utilized nets, rods, and harpoons, demonstrating a wide variety of harvesting methods. Following the sale of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands to the USA in 1867, the Aleut population in Russia remained only on the Commander Islands, preserving their unique culture—from which we draw inspiration to create our reliable vessels.
